Overview: Pesticide labels can be long and complex and it’s easy to fall into the habit of quickly scanning for the essentials. But a partial read can lead to environmental impacts that could easily have been avoided.  Join Health Canada’s Laura Feeny in an exploration of the often over-looked “Rest of The Label”. Laura will discuss why certain statements are included on labels, what they tell you about the product you’re using and how that should affect your application decisions. Expect to leave this presentation feeling confident that you understand all aspects of a pesticide label and can minimize impact on our beautiful Canadian landscape!

About the presenter: Laura Feeny is a Regional Pesticide Officer with Health Canada’s Pesticide Compliance Program. Laura has worked at the intersection of agriculture and science for over ten years. Since 2013, she has worked as a Regional Pesticide Officer with Health Canada’s Pesticide Compliance Program. She works with all levels of the pesticide industry, from manufacturers to end-users, to promote safe pesticide practices and communicate the polarizing topic of pesticide science. She has been recognized for her work with major online marketplaces, which reduced access to illegal pesticides in Canada. Prior to working with Health Canada, Laura spent three years working jointly with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Okanagan Sterile Insect Release Program researching the use of pheromone mating disruption as an alternative to conventional pesticides. Her university work explored the effects of the herbicide atrazine on neurosteroid synthesis. Laura holds an honours degree in biology from the University of British Columbia.
